Cool Cities  This Sierra Club initiative encourages US cities to commit to stopping global warming by signing the US Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement.

Earth 911 provides useful information on recycling and product stewardship.

Energy Star is a joint program of the US Environmental Protection Authority and the US Department of Energy designed to help us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. Its Energy Star Home Advisor provides helpful information on improving energy efficiency in heating and cooling the home.

 

Environment New Jersey is a statewide, environmental advocacy organization with an informative web site that includes news and tools for citizen action to promote clean air, water and energy.

 

Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative A nonprofit group working to promote just and meaningful climate policy.

 

Future Sea Level Rise and the New Jersey Coast: Assessing Potential Impacts and Opportunities Is a comprehensive 2005 study from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs on potential changes to NJ land area resulting from predicted global warming.

The New Jersey Global Warming Response Act adopted statewide limits for greenhouse gas emissions in July 2007. The law mandates the statewide reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, approximately a 20 percent reduction, followed by a further reduction of emissions to 80 percent below 2006 levels by 2050.

 

Green Seal is an independent nonprofit that promotes the manufacture, purchase and use of environmentally responsible products and services.  Web site includes directory of certified green products and services.

 

How clean is the electricity I use? USEPA site, which shows both the fuel mix used to generate electricity in your region and the emissions that result. Fuel mix and emissions are also compared to the national average.

Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) is an association of local, regional and national government organizations that have made a commitment to sustainable development. Its Cities for Climate Protection Campaign promotes a five-milestone methodology to help guide local governments in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through actions that also meet municipal priorities. ICLEI's Small Communities Toolkit provides climate protection guidance for communities having a population of 25,000 or less.


LocalHarvest is an organic and local food website. It maintains a nationwide directory of small farms, farmers' markets and other local food sources.


Mayors Committee for a Green Future a standing committee of the New Jersey State League of Municipalities, is developing a "Green Future Roadmap" and a series of municipal toolkits to help communities institute programs that address sustainability.

Municipal Land Use Center of NJ is a nonprofit associated with the College of New Jersey, supporting municipal governments by offering education and training, planning tools, technical assistance and referrals.

National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System - EPA offers training, workshops and archived webcasts on stormwater management and green infrastructure.

NativeEnergy, LLC is a national renewable energy marketing company that enables individuals, businesses, and organizations to join the fight against global warming and climate change by purchasing carbon offsets that help to build new wind farms and other renewable energy sources
 

New Jersey Clean Energy Program a statewide clean energy initiative, administered by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, provides information and financial incentives to help New Jersey residents, business and communities reduce their energy use, lower costs and protect the environment. Web site has an online calculator to determine savings from installing specific energy-efficient appliances.

New Jersey Clean Energy Renewable-Energy Contacts and Resources provides links for clean energy technologies.

Office of Planning and Sustainable Communities

NJDEP sponsored program to help communities become more sustainable through networking, technical assistance, benchmarking and incentives. Web site includes a guide to state grants and loans that support sustainability initiatives, a guide to green purchasing for municipalities, and primer on how to perform an energy audit.

 

Personal Emissions Calculator

Is a USEPA-developed tool enabling individuals to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from personal and household energy use.

 

Renewable Portfolio Standard  New Jersey's renewable portfolio standard (RPS) -- one of the most aggressive in the United States -- requires each supplier/provider serving retail customers in the state to include in the electricity it sells 22.5% qualifying renewables by 2021. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) made extensive revisions to the RPS in April 2006, significantly increasing the required percentages of "Class I" and "Class II" renewable energy, as well as the required separate percentage of solar electricity. By reporting year 2021, 2.12% solar electricity is required.  

 

Rutgers Climate and Environmental Change Initiative ("RCECI") is a university wide endeavor, whose goals are to understand the mechanisms that drive climate change and to predict climate change and its impacts and to educate. RCECI's resource page contains many helpful links to climate change information.

Stop Global Warming is a nonprofit activist group that provides education, information and support to prevent climate change. Web site has a calculator for estimating the amount of carbon dioxide one can prevent from being released into the atmosphere and how much money can be saved by making some small behavior changes.

Sustainable Jersey  is a certification and incentive program for NJ municipalities that want to go green, save money, and take steps to sustain their long-term quality of life.
